Actor, Writer, Production Designer, Sculptor
Carlos Vela-Martinez is a Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist whose curiosity about character and story has led him to explore sculpting, singing, acting and writing.
His stage work began with vocal jazz, then classical singing and then to performing in recitals, musicals and most recently short film. He has made props for several shows including a silicone cow’s tongue and the sword Excalibur. Carlos co-wrote, co-produced and performed in The Perfect Spot short opera film with Olesia Shewchuk and is currently Production Designer and Executive Producer for Vibrant House Productions’ next short opera film.
In his studio he sculpts whimsical creatures that inhabit dream-like narratives, working in wax or clay and making silicone molds for casting in resin or plaster. Each piece is unique as he explores paint and surface treatments. His work has shown at various galleries including BIAC Gallery and Artspeak Gallery and is collected by a growing number of patrons. A selection of his work is available at the Catching Stars Gallery on Bowen Island.
